Cloverhurst Avenue-Athens, Georgia

Cloverhurst Avenue-Athens, Georgia

Last year, we had the pleasure of working with a lovely family on the renovation of their 5 Points home. It is located in the Bloomfield Historic District of Athens, Georgia. This area was first recognized nationally as a historic area in 1985 and later locally recognized in 1988.

In 1893, Mr. Robert Bloomfield, an Athens business magnate, first subdivided this large swath of property into smaller parcels. Bloomfield, a businessman originally from New Jersey, opened a clothing store downtown. He owned the first pottery in town and became the largest shareholder of the Athens Manufacturing, Co. It was the first and longest running textile mill in Athens, Georgia. Bloomfield's expansion of this particular business made Georgia the third largest producer of cotton cloth in the mid 1800’s.

By 1907, the land had been purchased by John Mell. I found Mell was an Athens attorney with a known practice on Broad Street in town. What we find today is nearly the same layout that Mell designed for the Bloomfield Neighborhood. He included 3 parks within the area, and today, you will only find one park. It was across from this park that The Johnson's constructed this Tudor revival in 1936. Mr. Johnson was a bank teller in Athens and Mrs. Johnson lived in the home until the 1980’s when it was first sold. Our clients are only the 4th family to live in the home.
