Building Change

Building Change

Have you ever wanted something so badly for another person that you almost can’t stand it? That’s the excitement I have for my husband. After 20 years of a small (but mighty but aggravating but beloved) wood working shop, he gets to move all his tools from all the corners of the world to one single place, a new shop. Not sure if it’s just the wives of tradesmen, but the tools go everywhere. My dad loved golf, and that was pretty straightforward. One bag, some clubs in the trunk. My guy loves woodworking and that takes a lot more room than a car trunk.

This build drove us to evaluate work and how it looked. With new space coming together, there was electricity in the air. We wanted to use this space for our current work but we also wanted to bring something new to life. When I approached him with the idea of creating interiors together from our salvaged material, he nodded his head. Two days later, as I was getting dressed, he walked into our bedroom, looked at me, and said, "The Parts of Pieces." He began to say this specific venture should be outside of the other things we have done...a totally new experience. He told me he had looked at the definitions of pieces and parts...a part was something that came off of a piece. He said, "That’s us, that’s all of us."

We began discussions about why we would want to pursue this thought bubble...the name, the concept, the mission, the adventure. It came down to 2 things. Abundant growth lies in the moments when we realize we are a small part of something greater that connects us to each other. We also share an interest in the path an object or person has taken and the stories of that journey. This connection to the world should amplify our desire to be good stewards and well, the story is where the truth lives. The story of the beauty, the pain, the growth give texture and dimension. When we look back at our story, digging into the process of building a proper shop will forever be transformational.
